Xerox Versant vs PrimeLink: choosing a production press

Both lines print things an office copier cannot. They are not the same machine, and the wrong choice shows up either as jobs you have to turn away or as a press that never runs at capacity. Here is the honest split, with local service across the Northeast.

Four things that separate production from office printing

Rated monthly volume

An office multifunction printer rated for 30,000 pages a month will technically print 150,000, then start costing you in downtime. Production presses are rated for that load and built with the duty cycle and consumable capacity to hold it.

Media weight and size

Cover stock, synthetics, tabs, envelopes and long sheets are where office devices stop. PrimeLink runs to about 300 gsm, Versant to about 400 gsm with long-sheet support for banners and gate folds.

Color consistency

Selling print means matching yesterday's job. Versant adds automated density and registration calibration plus a full color server, so the third run of a brand piece matches the first.

Inline finishing

Saddle-stitch, square-fold spine flattening, face trim, hole punch and C/Z folding inline. Every step you keep on the press is a step you are not paying someone to do by hand.

The Xerox production lineup

Xerox PrimeLink C9200 series

In-plant print rooms and light production

Entry into production without a press-room footprint. Runs up to about 300 gsm from the trays, supports a production booklet maker and folding, and prints at 65 to 70 pages per minute. The right pick for churches, schools, municipalities and marketing departments printing their own collateral.

Xerox PrimeLink B9100 series

High-volume mono production

Black-and-white production at 100 to 136 pages per minute for manuals, statements, legal work and course packs. Far lower cost per page than color when the job does not need color, and it pairs well with a color device beside it.

Xerox Versant 280 Press

Commercial printers and serious in-plants

80 pages per minute, stocks to roughly 400 gsm, automated calibration and long-sheet capability. This is the machine behind the 'xerox versant 280 production press' searches: a digital press for shops selling print, not an office copier with a finisher bolted on.

Xerox Versant 4100 Press

Highest duty cycle and widest media range

100 pages per minute with the deepest automation in the Versant line. For shops where the press runs most of the shift and color approval cannot slip.

Finishing is usually the deciding factor

Most shops choose the press on speed and then discover the money was in finishing. A production booklet maker saddle-stitches and folds; the SquareFold trimmer flattens the spine and face-trims the edge so a 48-page booklet looks perfect-bound instead of home-made. Add C/Z folding for mailers and an inserter for pre-printed covers and you remove a whole bindery pass from your quoted price.

Before you commit, put real numbers behind it. Our print volume estimator sizes the duty cycle, and the cost-per-page calculator shows what those impressions cost against what you charge for them.

Why local service matters more on a press

When an office copier is down, people walk to another floor. When a press is down, you miss a customer deadline. That is the whole reason we run local analysts and technicians from Westchester to Provincetown instead of routing you through a national call center. You call, we come.

If you already own a press and just need coverage, our service and repair page covers how a call gets dispatched, and end-of-lease help keeps an aging press from auto-renewing on you.

Price a production configuration

Send us your monthly impressions, your heaviest stock and the finishing you sell. We will price two configurations with real click rates so you can see the margin, not a list price.
