What's actually going on
Return clauses put shipping, packaging and condition on the customer. Damage found on arrival becomes a bill.
Copiers store scanned documents and address books on an internal drive, so a return is also a data event.
What to do in the next 48 hours
- 1Request a return authorization number and confirm the return address in writing.
- 2Schedule the hard drive wipe and get written confirmation with the date, serial number and method.
- 3Photograph all four sides, the glass and the panel before pickup.
- 4Record the final meter the week of pickup and keep the freight receipt.
The honest tradeoffs
- Consumer-grade movers are cheaper than a certified deinstall until something is damaged in transit, at which point the leasing company bills full replacement value.
- Keeping the drive is sometimes allowed for a fee. For regulated data that fee is usually worth it.
