What happens if I just do nothing when my copier lease ends?

The exact sequence when a copier lease matures and nobody sends notice: automatic renewal, continued billing and how to unwind it.

What's actually going on

Copier leases do not simply stop. Almost all of them contain an automatic renewal clause that extends the term — commonly by six or twelve months — when no written notice arrives inside the window.

Billing continues at the same payment for a machine you may have already replaced.

Nobody is obligated to warn you. The renewal is the default state, not the exception.

What to do in the next 48 hours

  1. 1Check whether you are already renewed by asking the leasing company for your current maturity date in writing.
  2. 2If you have renewed, send notice immediately for the new maturity date rather than waiting.
  3. 3Ask whether the lessor will accept an early termination or a buyout to close the renewed term. Many will, for a fee that is cheaper than riding it out.
  4. 4Set a calendar reminder 180 days before the next maturity date so this cannot repeat.

The honest tradeoffs

  • Riding out a twelve-month renewal on an old machine can cost more than the buyout on a new one, but it requires no negotiation and no disruption.
  • Negotiating out of a renewal usually works, but it needs a replacement decision behind it — lessors settle faster when new business is attached.

Questions people ask next

Do copier leases automatically renew?
Most do. Standard end-of-term language renews the agreement for a further six or twelve months unless the lessee sends written notice inside the specified window, usually 90 to 150 days before maturity.
Can I cancel an automatically renewed copier lease?
Not unilaterally, but leasing companies frequently accept a negotiated early termination or buyout to close a renewal term. Ask for the figure in writing and compare it against simply paying out the renewal.
