What's actually going on
005-121 sits in the document feeder chain. The first three digits identify the subsystem and the digits after the dash identify the specific fault within it.
Stapled, folded, curled or mixed-size originals are the leading cause.
Worn feed rollers lose grip and start double-feeding or skewing long before they fail completely.
Correction fluid, sticky notes and glossy originals all slip.
What to do in the next 48 hours
- 1Write down the full code — 005-121 — before clearing anything, along with the machine's serial number and current meter reading.
- 2Lift the feeder cover, remove every sheet, and check under the feed roller for a page pulled through part way.
- 3Remove staples and flatten curled leading edges before refeeding.
- 4Wipe the feed and separator rollers with a lint-free cloth and water — not solvent.
- 5Fan the originals and square them before loading, and set the guides against the stack.
- 6If the identical code returns within a day of clearing it, stop clearing and log a service call. A code that comes back is a component telling you it is finished.
The honest tradeoffs
- Working around this by printing from another machine is fine short term, but the underlying cause does not resolve itself and usually spreads to other users.
- If clean, flat originals still misfeed, the feed and separator rollers are worn and should be replaced as a set.
