My Xerox is showing an error code. What does it mean?

How Xerox fault codes are structured, which families you can clear yourself, and which ones mean stop using the machine and call for service.

What's actually going on

Xerox status codes use a three-part number: chain, link and suffix. The first three digits identify the subsystem, so 010 is fuser, 016 is network and controller, 042 is drive, 077 is paper transport and 093 is xerographics.

Most codes are recoverable interlocks, not failures. The machine stops to protect itself and clears once the condition is removed.

A code that returns within a day of clearing is a component telling you it is at end of life, not a glitch.

What to do in the next 48 hours

  1. 1Write the full code down before you clear it, including the suffix. Half a code is not diagnosable.
  2. 2Power cycle properly: power down from the interface, wait sixty seconds, then restart. This clears the majority of 016 network and controller codes.
  3. 3Open and close every door and clear every jam path, including the bypass and the finisher. Interlock codes clear this way.
  4. 4If the same code returns twice, stop clearing it and log a service call with the code and the meter reading.

The honest tradeoffs

  • Repeatedly clearing a hard fault to keep working through a deadline is understandable, but fuser and xerographics faults can damage other components if you keep printing through them.
  • Calling on the first occurrence of a soft code costs you a visit for something a restart would have fixed.

Questions people ask next

What do the first three digits of a Xerox error code mean?
They identify the subsystem, called the chain. Common ones are 010 for the fuser, 016 for network and controller, 042 for drives, 077 for paper transport and 093 for the xerographic module. The digits after the dash identify the specific fault within that subsystem.
Can I clear a Xerox error code myself?
Often yes. Power down from the user interface, wait a minute and restart, then open and close all doors and clear every paper path. If the identical code returns within a day, it is a component fault and needs a technician.
